Fire Prevention Week
By Cohen & Dwin, P.A. on January 23, 2019 | In Burn Injury
October 7th-14th is Fire Prevention Week, a week dedicated to raising awareness of the leading causes of fire and reducing instances of burn injury. According to the National Fire Prevention Agency (NFPA), cooking equipment catching fire is the leading cause of fires that result in structural damage to homes. Smoking is the leading cause of civilian fire-related deaths. Portable heaters are the second leading cause of fire-related death in homes across the United States.
Preschoolers and kindergarteners are more likely to start fires in homes in which matches or lighters are readily available. These same children are more likely to die in fires, making it essential that parents and guardians take every precaution to keep firestarters out of the hands of children. Risks are increased for harm to children and adults in homes in which tobacco products are used.
The number one cause of fires in the home is unattended cooking equipment. The NFPA reports that there are 455 cooking fires started daily, resulting in an average of 166,100 cooking-related fires every year. 46% of all fire-related injury and 49% of all cooking fire-related deaths are caused by unattended cooking equipment. Adults over 65 are at the highest risk for injury or death from these fires.
Understanding Your Options
Not all fires are black and white. Even in cases of unattended cooking equipment, defective products may increase risks of injury, explosion, and death. In some cases, it is a product itself, and not inattention, that results in a fire.
When you or someone you love is injured in a fire, you may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and personal pain and suffering in addition to compensation for property damage. The best way to determine if you are eligible for legal action is through a private and confidential consultation at one of our Baltimore area offices. During this free case review, we can evaluate the extent of damage, begin to identify contributing factors, and help you determine if you have cause to file suit. We can also advise you on the best way to move forward with your claim.
Burn injury can result in lasting pain, physical limitations, permanent disfigurement, and severe emotional trauma. If your injury was the result of someone else’s negligence, you have every right to seek compensation for these damages. Our Baltimore personal injury attorneys are here to help.
